About me
Dr. Rosalyn Shahid is a literacy consultant, an adjunct instructor, a lover of books, and a social justice advocate. She is a native Detroiter, graduate of thee Cass Technical High School, and a former Detroit high school English teacher, which grounds her work. The primary aim of her research and practice is to build teacher capacity, and by extension, empower students through advanced literacy instructional models. Her work examines the interconnectedness of adolescent development, equity-centered pedagogy, and disciplinary literacy. Dr. Shahid holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), a Master of Education in Reading and Reading Specialist Endorsement (K-12) from Marygrove College, and a Ph.D. in Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University. She currently works as a consultant for Wayne Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) where she supports districts throughout Wayne County.
Since 2006, Jeffrey has been a middle school and high school classroom teacher, an instructional coach, a building-level and district-level department chair, a secondary school writing center director, and a leader of professional learning for teachers locally and nationally His writing, advocacy, coaching, and teaching practice focus on building humanized, student-centered spaces through culturally responsive curriculumand pedagogy, fair and equitable grading and assessment practices, equity-based disciplinary literacies, and transformative justice.Jeffrey won the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti Chamber of Commerce E3 Award and the Michigan Association of School Boards’ EdEx Award in 2015, was named a Washtenaw County Teacher of the Year in 2016, and was selected as one of the first members of the State of Michigan’s Innovative Educator Corps in 2018. He used his Innovative Educator Award to help grow and sustain the number of secondary school writing centers in Washtenaw County and beyond.Jeffrey earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with majors in English and Political Science. He has a Master's in Teaching from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and he received another Master's in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
Laura Gabrion is a Literacy Consultant at Wayne RESA and a member of the editorial review
board for the Michigan Reading Journal. She is a University of Michigan, DePaul University, and
Oakland University alumnus. Her current research interests include self-efficacy and motivation,
dialogic feedback, disciplinary literacy, and best practices in literacy coaching.
